In an unprecedented move, the National Rifle Association (NRA) has garnered full support from the entire Republican front in a legal dispute surrounding gun control orders imposed by governors in various states. The NRA is suing several governors, arguing that their attempts to control firearms during the pandemic have overstepped Constitutional boundaries.
The lawsuit, which was filed in early July, claims that governors ran afoul of the Second Amendment when they put the gun control orders in place. As far as the NRA is concerned, attempts to interfere with legal gun ownership in any form are unconstitutional and should not be enforced on citizens.
It seemed initially that the lawsuit would struggle to gain any momentum, as Democrats remained largely unconvinced and unswayed by the claims outlined in the legal action. However, with the unanimous backing of the GOP, the NRA believes that it has a reasonable chance of seeing its goals achieved in the long term.
The ultimate goal here is to bring an end to gun control orders that, according to the organization, have caused harm to thriving gun-related businesses, violated the Second Amendment, and made it more difficult for law-abiding citizens to access firearms. If the lawsuit is successful, then it could set a precedent for similar legal challenges down the line.
The unified stance of the Republican party gives the NRA a major advantage in this case, as the organization is now far better placed to make its claims stick and obtain a positive outcome. This is especially true when compared to other legal battles which the NRA has been involved with in recent months.
At the moment, it is difficult to tell what the result of this lawsuit will be. Although the NRA now has a more significant chance of success than it did previously, the eventual outcome of the case is still very much up in the air. We will have to wait and see how further developments pan out before making any definitive judgments.
