Hunter Biden, son of Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, is reportedly willing to testify under oath in public on the matter of his alleged business dealings in Ukraine. This news comes after the Republican-led U.S. House of Representatives, through the House Oversight Committee led by Congressman Jim Comer, issued a subpoena for him to appear as a witness in October.
According to a statement released by Biden’s lawyer, George Mesires, the former Vice President’s son has stated that he is “eager and willing” to tell his side of the story, under oath and in a public forum. Biden, who has been the focus of much media scrutiny concerning his involvement in Ukraine’s gas industry, has consistently maintained that any suggestion of improper activity on his part was unfounded.
Mesires further clarified that Biden would be willing to appear without the need for a subpoena, and that Comer’s decision to use such “extraordinary measures”—Comer’s defending the need for the subpoena on the basis that Biden had ignored earlier requests to appear before the committee—was unnecessary.
The timing of Biden’s appearance, which the subpoena also is requesting, is yet to be determined. Although the timing of his appearance may be determined by the terms of the subpoena, it suggests that Biden may still make a public appearance before the upcoming presidential election, as a proactive stance toward clearing his name of any impropriety.
