President Joe Biden has finally broken his silence on the possibility of impeachment, laying blame squarely at the feet of Republicans for their desire to shut down the government.
In a statement released late Wednesday night, Biden stated that the Republican Party’s approach to governing, which seeks to “divide and conquer” instead of finding consensus, has been a major contributor to the threat of impeachment and the government shutdown. He noted that it was the Republicans’ actions that have created the “highly partisan and poisonous atmosphere” in Washington, D.C., and accused them of “fostering an environment of near constant crisis”.
The President stated that elected officials need to put aside “personal agendas” and find common ground to ensure that Congress can pass meaningful legislation. “It’s not enough to just talk about the many problems we face as a nation,” he said. “We must identify and implement solutions that will create a better future for all Americans.”
Biden also expressed his frustration at the looming threat of impeachment, noting that he does not believe it is the “right message to be sending.” He noted that the potential consequences of impeachment, including a weakening of the office of the presidency.
The President noted that he would be open to negotiations with members of both parties, but warned that he would never “compromise the Constitution and our democracy in the process.” He also stressed that he would never “let the people’s trust in our government be undermined.”
It appears that President Biden is seeking to move beyond the partisan bickering and focus on the issues that really matter to the people of the United States. He has made clear that, despite the GOP’s attempts to stir up controversy, he is intent on working towards a better future and that impeachment is not the answer.
